On Sunday 16th November, around two hundred people gathered at the Reformed Synagogue on Princes Street to take part in a walk for peace. On this cold but sunny afternoon, people of many faiths—and of none—walked side by side to express our shared hope for peace and our unity as a community.
The walk began with the sounding of the Jewish Shofar—the ram’s horn mentioned in the Bible. As we made our way down Lord Street, we paused at Christ Church, where the Revd Ben Dyer welcomed us warmly and offered words of encouragement. Continuing along to Union Street, we then turned towards our final destination: the Mosque on Sussex Road. There, Imam Ibrahim Hussein greeted us kindly, and we were generously offered food and hospitality.
Throughout the walk, there was a strong sense of people reaching across barriers that could so easily divide us. The event was a visible sign that, despite our differences, we all share a desire to live peacefully and humanly alongside one another. We want our town to flourish—a place where everyone has space to belong.
True peace is not always easy to achieve, but by walking together on Sunday, we listened to each other’s stories and began to understand one another better.
Most important of all, we walked as friends.
